Plumbing searches are about as urgent as local search gets. A burst pipe, a leak through the kitchen ceiling, no heating in January. The person searching has a problem right now, and they’ll ring whoever looks credible first.
But a plumbing business that only gets emergency calls is always busy and never booked up ahead. SEO for plumbers means being found for both: the 7am leak and the bathroom that’s getting quotes for spring.
The searches that matter
- Emergencies: “emergency plumber near me”, “burst pipe”, “boiler not working”, “no hot water”. These mostly happen on a phone and mostly end in a call.
- Heating: “boiler service [town]”, “boiler replacement cost”, “power flush”. These are seasonal, quiet in summer and very busy from October.
- Planned work: “bathroom fitter [town]”, “new radiators”, “unvented cylinder installation”. Bigger jobs, longer decisions, more comparing.
The map pack wins nearly all the emergency searches. Planned work is where a decent website page can get you in front of people who are still deciding.
1. Get your Google Business Profile right
- Primary category: “Plumber”. If heating is half your work, add “Heating contractor” and “Boiler repair service” as secondary categories. If you fit bathrooms, add “Bathroom remodeler”.
- Services: list them one by one. Leak repairs, boiler servicing, boiler installation, radiators, bathrooms, cylinders, drains. Each line is a search Google can match you to.
- Hours: if you do out-of-hours call-outs, set your hours to show it. Someone searching at 10pm will often be shown businesses that are open.
- Service areas: where you’ll actually drive to at short notice, not the whole county.

2. Show Gas Safe at a glance
If you work on gas, your Gas Safe registration is the first thing a careful customer checks. Put the logo and your registration number on every page and in your profile description. If you’re WaterSafe or another approved scheme, say so too.
It won’t move your ranking on its own. It makes people far more likely to ring you rather than the next name, and Google notices which listings get the calls.
3. Get ready for winter before it arrives
Boiler searches climb every autumn and peak with the first cold snap. The plumbers who get those calls had their profile and pages sorted in September, not in the week the weather turned.
- Post on your profile in October about servicing boilers before winter.
- Make sure your boiler service and boiler repair pages are up to date and mention the towns you cover.
- Ask your summer customers for reviews now, so you go into winter with recent ones.
4. A page for each kind of job
Emergency work and bathroom fitting are different customers. One wants someone in the next hour. The other wants to see your past bathrooms, know how long it takes and get a rough idea of cost.
One services page can’t do both. Give each main job its own page: emergency plumbing, boiler servicing, boiler installation, bathrooms. Mention the towns you cover on each. Photos of your own work count for a lot here, especially on bathroom pages, where people are picturing their own room.
5. Reviews that say what you fixed
“Came out within the hour to a burst pipe in Marlow and sorted it fast” does more for you than “great service”. It tells the next customer you’ll turn up, and it tells Google you do emergency work in Marlow.
Ask every customer on the day, by text, with a direct review link, and ask them to mention the job and the town. Here’s a simple system for getting more Google reviews.
6. Make it easy to ring you
Most plumbing enquiries are calls, often from someone standing in water. Your number should be at the top of every page and tappable on a phone. If you have a mobile and a landline, pick one and use it everywhere so calls don’t go astray.
Then check your profile’s performance for calls and website clicks, because a lot of those calls never touch your website. We explain where those enquiries hide.
How long it takes
Profile fixes can show within weeks. Ranking for boiler or bathroom work in a busy town usually takes two to four months of steady work, which is the main reason to start before winter rather than during it.
It’s what we did for Hazlemere Heating, Gas Safe heating engineers near High Wycombe: a new website built around boiler installation, servicing and repairs, with their Gas Safe number on every page, and an optimised Google profile listing each of those services.
The same approach took an Amersham roofer from about six profile interactions in three months to over forty. The roofer’s guide and the electrician’s guide cover what’s different for those trades.
